Bridge of Orchy

Unsurprisingly, this small village is of course named after its bridge, which crosses over the River Orchy. Dating back to 1751, the bridge itself was built by the British Army. It was built during the pacification of the highland clans after the Battle of Culloden in 1746.

These military roads that the bridge is a part of, were to facilitate the quick movement of soldiers into the highlands to supress any rebellion.

Despite its small size, the village is also served by a railway station. The station building itself is no longer operational. However, it is now used as a bunkhouse for many travellers of the West Highland Way.
