West Highland Way Itinerary

Along the route there are several different towns, villages and smaller settlements which offer various different options for West Highland Way Accommodation. Below you will find links to pages where you will find some suggested places to stay in each location.

These include camping sites, self catering, ‘glamping’ pods, bed & breakfasts and hotels. Please bear in mind that in some of these location accommodation is very limited (Kingshouse for example).

Towns, villages and settlements along the route

The starting point of the West Highland Way. You may chose to spend your first night in Milngavie so that you are fresh and ready to begin your hike the following morning.

Drymen is a popular tourist village just a few miles from Loch Lomond. The village has several bars, restaurants, hotels, B&B’s as well as a campsite.

The official route actually passes by the outskirts of Drymen, so there is approximately a half mile diversion off the path to get to the center of the village.

Balmaha is a small picturesque village at the foot of Conic Hill, on the shores of Loch Lomond.

Rowardennan

Rowardennan is a small rural community found at the base of Ben Lomond, which is Scotlands most southernly munro.

Optional: You could add an extra day to stay in Rowardennan and climb the summit.

Inversnaid

Inversnaid is also a small rural community found on the shores of the east side of Loch Lomond

Inverarnan

Inverarnan is a small hamlet along the West Highland Way which is well known for The Drovers Inn which is found here.

Crianlarich is a village found approximately 6 miles north of the tip of Loch Lomond

Tyndrum is a popular tourist village on the A82 road with coaches frequently stopping here for refreshments.

Bridge of Orchy is a small village which, as you may have guessed, is named after the crossing over the river Orchy which is found here.

Kingshouse

Kingshouse is a remote hamlet served by a 17th century hotel

Kinlochleven

Kinglochleven is a village in the highlands which is located next to Loch Leven. Interestingly, Kinlochleven was the first village in the world to have every house connected to electricity.

Fort William

The second largest town to be found in the highlands – and the end point of the West Highland Way.

The highest point in Britain, Ben Nevis, lays just outside of Fort William. Maybe you would like to stay here another day and scale this mountain after your hike?
